How to Delete Yourself from The Internet

Here at Q2Q-IT we are aware that sometimes your internet history can come back to haunt you. Have you ever made a small faux pas on the internet? Or indeed, find yourself wincing at the old posts or photos that you have on social media? Fear not, for a Swedish website called Deseat.me has provided the world with the ability to delete themselves from the internet.

It seems drastic, that’s because it is. At the click of a button, you can delete every trace of your online profiles. The whole history of your time online gone in an instant. The implications of such an act are quite heavy, but there are also several reasons that this might also be a benefit for many people.

But, how does the site achieve this?

The site requires you to sign in with your Google account and Deseat.me then finds all of the accounts such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter that are linked to it. The site then provides the user with links that will delete all their account information. Overall, it is a very simple and hassle-free way to delete your online presence.

There are more serious implications to this deleting of data, including being able to delete potentially vital information. In that instant, you may want to rid yourself of your online presence. But, months or years down the line you may regret it. Imagine the hardcopy version – setting fire to every photograph or a scrap of paper you had written on over years. It would create a burning bonfire no doubt.

More serious still, people could potentially delete incriminating information that would have helped lead to a prosecution. This is obviously the worst-case scenario, but in the growing tech-savvy world it may be a very likely reality.

Ultimately, this is a website that may not see much use. People are tied to their social networks and internet usage, it has become an integral part of modern life. However, with the approaching introduction of the Investigatory Powers Bill, increasingly people may be warier about their internet footprint. This is a bill that gives the government the power to access every member of the UK’s internet history and keep it stored for twelve month periods. With such an invasion of privacy, people may soon find this little website the answer to their lost privacy…
