What are the benefits of cloud computing?

There’s so much in the news about what can go wrong when cyber-security isn’t made a priority, so it’s never been more important for SMEs to choose a safe computing system for processing and storing their data.

Whilst complex hardware with endless security add-ons may have been the only option for keeping sensitive information secure at one time, there are so many more options on the market these days – and cloud computing is one of the best.

So whether you’re already a convert, or are still confused by the concept of data files hovering in the ether, here are just some of the silver linings to cloud computing:

·       Scalability

Unlike physical infrastructure, cloud systems can be scaled up or down depending on the size of your business. This means you won’t need to worry about any disruptive transfers if you run out of space – you can simply upgrade!

·       Affordability

Rather than having one hefty pay-out for expensive hardware, you rent cloud storage – usually on a monthly basis – making it a much more cost-effective option for small businesses. Plus, less hardware equates to the need for less physical space and power, saving you even more money.

·       Flexibility and mobility

The wireless revolution has already liberated us from being tethered to our desks – we can now make anywhere with a WiFi connection into an office. But cloud computing makes remote working even easier as files can be accessed from anywhere – removing the need for external storage devices and confusing duplicate documents!

·       Collaboration

Even within tiny businesses, keeping track of everything that’s going on can be tricky, especially when two or more people are working on the same project. But cloud computing’s file sharing capabilities make collaboration so much easier – files are automatically synchronised over the internet, so you won’t ever need to worry about working on an out-of-date document!

·       Security

Data security is currently – quite rightly – one of the biggest concerns for businesses. Although the cloud has not always been viewed as the safest computing option, vast improvements have been made over the years and robust encryption processes and security certificates are continually being developed. Thanks to these enhancements, some of the world’s largest corporations are trusting the cloud over more traditional hardware to keep their sensitive information secure. If it’s good enough for them, it’s probably worth a look!
