What was the challenge?

Banks Lyon had taken an opportunity to expand their site into the building next door. The new space was going through a full major refurbish and therefore had no IT infrastructure in place. Their network and I.T. systems needed to be increased, for both wired and wireless, maintaining connectivity in the existing building while also expanding into the new space.

What did we do to fix?

A prerequisite survey was undertaken to determine the best location for a new data cabinet, wireless access points, network sockets, power and general discussions on structured cabling. Q2Q also met and co-ordinated with, various third parties to discuss the clients’ requirements and how we could best work together to meet the client’s needs.

Q2Q decided to link the two buildings with Fibre connections, to avoid pulling multiple copper cables through the two sites, whilst providing scalability for the future. We specified and proposed the additional hardware required to make sure new equipment was in line with their current infrastructure to keep this uniformed. We completed the network terminations for the copper cabling and the pre-terminated Fibre at each end whilst providing accurate and logical labelling. All testing was completed and staff desks pre patched into the new network ready for them to move over.

What effect did it have for the client?

A seamless extension of their infrastructure with enhancements, redundances and future proofing in place. As this was a new setup we had the opportunity of a fresh start, and to ensure industry best practises were followed throughout.

We opted to use a bi-directional fibre solution (BiDi) for the connections between existing and new spaces.

This technology can send and receive data simultaneously over a single strand of fibre, utilising different light wavelengths for Tx and Rx.

This means only half the fibre runs are needed vs the normal Duplex solution which sends and receives over two separate strands.

Fewer panels and ports are required and gives more scope for future expansion if needed.
